Fernando Alvarez was born and raised in San Antonio, Texas. Fernando graduated from Johnny F. Kennedy High School in San Antonio, TX in 1968. He served in the U.S. Army from 1969-1972. He was assigned to the First Air Cavalry with 1st. Battalion 5th. Regiment in Vietnam and Cambodia where his assignment was that of a radio man. Fernando served approximately 6 months in combat before being wounded and sent back to Fort Sam Houston hospital in San Antonio, Tx. In early May of 1970, Fernando, too, had an opportunity to see his oldest brother Emeterio, who was in the USAF in Vietnam. “It was by God’s doing that this happened,” says Fernando. They spent time together recollecting old times. Fernando later became an educator, retired and lives with his family in Edinburg, Texas.
